Introduction
On my way home from worship, I sat at a red light and looked over at the electronic sign in front of a denominational church. Aside from the usual information about service times, they announce that bible classes for kids will be cancelled for the summer. Other events, as well, won’t be available during the summer.
Sometimes people take this as a hint or excuse to attend worship less. If classes aren’t made available, why not cancel all church services?
In the Good Ol’ Summertime!
As the weather turns warmer, people’s thoughts turn to outdoor activities. Taking a vacation to a different state or traveling across the country are high on their list. What isn’t high on that same list is finding a congregation to worship with as they travel.
There’s nothing wrong with taking time off from work and spending more quality time with children as they are now out of school. However, bible study and worship assembly should be just as important as time away from work. Don’t take a vacation from God because He doesn’t take a vacation away from you!
Suggestions for Worshipping away from Home
When planning a vacation or trip, here are some ideas to help you stay in your studies…
- Decide how long your trip is and what city you will be on Sunday and/or Wednesday night.
- Look for a faithful congregation in that area to assemble with on those days.
- View their website or call a member there and make sure you match up with their beliefs.
- Do a “dry run” the day before services to find out exactly where the building is and how long it will take to get there.
- If nothing else, have a bible study with your family on those days.
- Tune in on social media for a worship service online.
Some preachers will tell you not to go anywhere on vacation where there is no faithful congregation assembling. Most times this is impossible as not everyone’s family are members of The Church or near a faithful congregation. Since the pandemic of 2020, many congregations are broadcasting their services online social media platforms. It may not be the same thing but, at least, you can get feed your soul (Heb. 5:14).
Conclusion
As the writer of Hebrews states, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching. (Hebrews 10:25) In today’s technological age, there are always ways of keeping your studies up and edifying the whole family while on vacation.
