Putting Christ Back In

Introduction

At this time of year, you’ll hear people of a religious denominations utter the phrase, “We need to put Christ back into Christmas”. The concept being that the holiday is too commercialized; too paganistic. That the focus should be on the birth of our Lord and Savior. Even the most basic bible student will notice that the word Christmas doesn’t appear in scripture; nor the idea that Jesus’ birthday was celebrated annually as a command from God.

Putting Christ in Christmas is like putting a square peg into a round hole; it just doesn’t fit. Instead, we’ll look at the things that actually need Christ in it.

Let’s put Christ back in…

  • The position of authority. In Matt. 28:18 Jesus said, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.” Stop listening to people name Pastor, Reverend, Father, or Pope. Jesus is our only authority.
  • As the spokesperson of God. There are too many that claim that they are from God or say they have heard his voice. Jesus is our mediator (1 Tim. 2:5); Hear ye him! (Mt. 17:5)
  • As the Savior of the World. Jesus said in Lk. 19: 10, “for the Son of man came to seek and to save that which was lost.” If he is your savior, then do as he commands (Jn. 14:15).
  • The church as Head. We have already said he has the authority and is the savior; he needs to be head of the church (Eph. 1:22-23; Col. 1:18). Abide in his teaching; not that of man’s (Mt. 15:7-9).
  • Our homes. Both parents and children need to know their position in their family; to get in it and stay in it.
    1. Husband is head—Eph. 5: 23
    2. Wife is subject to Husband—vs. 22
    3. Subject to each other—vs. 21 (United in fear of God)
    4. Children subject to parents—Eph. 6: 1-2
  • Christians and the name we wear. If you are a Christian, act like one! Don’t call yourself by any manmade name like Catholic, Lutheran, Methodist, etc. Christ should live in us (Gal. 2:20) and we should be happy simply being called Christian (Acts 11:26; 26:28; 1 Pet. 4:16).
  • Our preaching. Too many sermons today are full of fluff or watered down so as not to offend. Read Mt. 23 and see if Jesus watered down his words against the Scribes and Pharisees. See if he was afraid to offend those in the temple in Jn. 2: 13-16. This is the attitude needed in our preaching.

Conclusion

Christ needs to be in a lot of things, but Christmas isn’t one of them. It’s time we showed people just how important Christ is in our lives; the way we act and the way we talk. Don’t put Christ on as an outfit worn only on Sunday; “wear” Him as a lifestyle 24/7/365.
