Are There Vampires in the Bible?

Introduction

It’s been many years since I last wrote an article like this. If you’ve ever read any of my early articles; 2002-2005, I did mostly pieces like this which were kind of goofy in nature showing the truth from scripture.

The other day I was looking up an article online and, for some reason, this whole thing on vampires and the bible came up. Naturally, I had to read this and I’ll share their findings and show you what the scriptures are actually talking about.

“Vampire” Scriptures

Leviticus 17:10-14, ‘And whatever man of the house of Israel, or of the strangers who dwell among you, who eats any blood, I will set My face against that person who eats blood, and will cut him off from among his people. For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.’ “Therefore I said to the children of Israel, ‘No one among you shall eat blood, nor shall any stranger who dwells among you eat blood. Whatever man of the children of Israel, or of the strangers who dwell among you, who hunts and catches any animal or bird that may be eaten, he shall pour out its blood and cover it with dust; for it is the life of all flesh. Its blood sustains its life. Therefore I said to the children of Israel, ‘You shall not eat the blood of any flesh, for the life of all flesh is its blood. Whoever eats it shall be cut off.’”

Proverbs 30:14 – There is a generation whose teeth are like swords, And whose fangs are like knives, To devour the poor from off the earth, And the needy from among men.

Revelation 16:6 – For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them blood to drink; for they are worthy.

Revelation 17:6 – And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.

What do these Scriptures Teach?

First off, let me just say that there aren’t any vampires in the bible. Secondly, there were more than just this handful of verses given; anything pertaining to blood or sharp teeth.

Now, let’s go through what the scriptures are actually teaching. Lev. 17 is the most important passage as it speaks that the lifeforce is within the blood. Since blood was used in the daily sacrifices under the Old Law it was forbidden to be eaten by any of the congregation including strangers (those from other nations) who might be visiting.

This hearkens back to Gen. 9, the post-flood Earth, in which God spoke to Noah, “But you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood. (Genesis 9:4) Essentially, this is also about not being hasty to eat the meat immediately (raw) but, rather, to prepare it by roasting it or some other cooking method.

Overall, it was the shed blood of Jesus on the cross that redeems us from our sins (Eph. 1:7; Col. 1:14; Heb. 9:14, etc.). We should value that lifeforce given to us by God.

Next the verse of Proverbs 30:14 is part of a larger passage (vs. 11-14) describes those who are hateful people. Verse 14 describes those who are cruel oppressors which ties back to verse 10, Slander not a servant unto his master, Lest he curse thee, and thou be held guilty. (ASV)

Finally, the two verses in Revelation are prophetic language. There isn’t any literal blood drinking going on at all. Both verses speak of the great amount of bloodshed by other nations against The Church (NT Christians) who suffered for being different from the rest (2 Cor. 6:17; 1 Pet. 4:3-4).

This also hearkens back to Rev. 6:9-10, When He opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the testimony which they held. And they cried with a loud voice, saying, “How long, O Lord, holy and true, until You judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?” Again, those who were martyred for the cause of Christ seek justice for their unjust death.

Conclusion

Too many people want to draw their own conclusions concerning what the scriptures teach, rather than make a concentrated effort to study for themselves.

For some, the bible isn’t interesting enough that they have to invent their own ideas to make it more “entertaining”; putting them on a so-called “higher level of learning”. If you just stick to what the bible says, you will find it to fascinating just as written.
